The WikiVision team also made a trip to Tecate, Mexico during the spring of 2022 to provide free cataract surgeries to patients in need from those communities. Working with fellow ophthalmologists, we restored vision to 20 people who were greatly in need of their sight. With the cost of cataract surgeries, it would have taken many of these people many years to afford the treatment, but we were able to give their vision back at zero cost. Sight is very important to people for the purpose of working and living a more fulfilling life. Not only does blindness affect the person with the vision problems, but it affects one’s family members, who have to help the person go about their daily lives. It was amazing being able to restore such an essential sense and see the sense of freedom people felt after they could see again.
